Assignment 2: Steps in Creating Anniversary Card

REMINDER: For all of you out there, I don't mind if you learn the techniques from my blog, but please use it wisely by using your creativity to apply on your own greeting cards. DO NOT COPY MY STEPS BLINDLY, it will just makes your card looks more ugly. Thank You.

Steps:
Step 1: Create a A4 size file, rotate the image to landscape position. Create a new layer. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the whole image, set the foreground color to #d3c29d. Press Alt+Backspace to fill in the foreground color into the selection.

Step 2: Create a new layer. Go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Set the blending mode to Color Burn and the opacity of the layer to around 10%. Then merge the layer with the previous layer.

Step 3: Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to cut off the right half of the image and paste it in the new layer.

Step 4: On the layer of the left half of the image, add Layer Style of Inner Glow. Set the Color for the Inner Glow as Black color, Blend Mode as Color Burn, Noise at around 10%, Choke at around 5%, Size at around 200px.

Step 5: Add Vector Mask to the layer. Make sure that the Foreground color is set to black color. Choose the Brush Tool. Press F5 to show the Brushes Panel. At the Brush Tip Shape, choose brush number 134 and 43. Enable Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Other Dynamics. You can play with any options inside Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Other Dynamics as long as the output you get will be as random as possible. Now you can paint in the vector mask by using these two brush to get some grunge paper effects.

Step 6: Too make the grunge paper effects more real and random, use Eraser Tool, once again at the Brush Tip Shape, choose brush number 66. Enable Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Other Dynamics. Set the options inside Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Other Dynamics to get the random output. Now you can erase some effects to create more random grunge paper effect in the Vector Mask that you created just now.

Step 7: By using Burn Tool, you can create some burning effect on the image to make the image looks like an old paper.

Step 8: Now I want to create more effects to make it looks like a real antique paper. So I open a grunge paper image that I found in net in Photoshop.

Step 9: Go to Image>Adjustments>Threshold. Now the image immediately turn into black and white. Set the Threshold Level to around 160 to get some grunge effect of the paper.

Step 10: Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the whole image. Then go to Edit>Define Brush Preset. Set the name of the newly created brush as "Grunge effect".

Step 11: Go back to our main project file. Create a new layer, click on Brush Tool, at the Brush Tip Shape there choose the "Grunge Effect" brush that you just created. Click once on the image then press Ctrl+T to resize it to fit the front page of the card and also flip it 180 degrees.

Step 12: Set the Blending Mode to Color Burn, and set the Opacity down to around 75%.

Step 13: Now the old antique paper look is already done but I am not quite satisfied with the color. Therefore I create an Adjustment Layer of Color Balance. I adjusted the color of the image to become more yellowish.

Step 14: I created a new layer. By using Rectangular Marquee Tool, I select a long rectangular on the right hand side of the front page. Then by using Paint Bucket Tool, I fill in a dark red color in the selection to create a ribbon across the front page. Then I use the effect of Drop Shadow on the layer.

Step 15: Now open the Vintage Flower Design image in Photoshop. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the whole image then copy and paste it in our main project file. Press Ctrl+T to resize it until it is bigger than the size of the red ribbon that we created just now.

Step 16: Press Ctrl+Alt then click in between the layer of the red ribbon and the layer of the vintage flower design to create a clipping mask. Then set the Blending Mode for the vintage flower design layer to Soft Light and set the Opacity of the layer to around 30%.

Step 17: Create a new layer. Use Brush Tool and select the Grunge Effect brush that we created. Make sure that the foreground color is set to black color. Now paint once on the layer and resize it to fit the front page of the card. Set the Blending Mode to Color Burn and the Opacity to around 30%. Create a Clipping Mask between this layer and the vintage flower design with pressing Ctrl+Alt and click in between of these both layers.

Step 18: Open the lace image in Photoshop. To crop the lace image I used Magic Wand Tool. Make sure that the Contiguous option for Magic Wand Tool is unchecked. Set the Tolerance to around 20%. Click on the grey color background to select all the background and press delete.

Step 19: Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to copy the lace image to the main project file. Resize the image by pressing Ctrl+T and rotate it. Duplicate the layer few times and connect all the laces into one long lace and then merger all the layers into one. Use the effect of drop Shadow for this layer too.

Step 20: Open the couple image in Photoshop. Crop the image by using Rectangular Marquee Tool and paste it in our main project file.

Step 21: Open the antique frame image in Photoshop. Use the Magic Wand Tool to delete off the center white color part. Then use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to crop the frame out and paste it in our main project file. Add the effect of Drop Shadow to this layer too.

Step 22: Open the image of the rose in Photoshop. Use the Magic Wand Tool to delete off the white color background. Once again, make sure the the Contiguous option is unchecked. Then use rectangular Marquee Tool to copy and paste in out main project file. Press Ctrl+T to resize it. Duplicate the layer to create another rose, press Ctrl+T to resize it to make it smaller than the previous rose, right click and flip it vertically.

Step 23: Now I use the Horizontal Type Tool to type the wording of "A Trunkful of Love for You". I Rasterize Type to make it an image so that I will not having any problem getting the same font in any other computer. I apply effects of Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss>Contour to the wordings.

Step 24: Now we are done with the cover of the greeting cards. We are going to work on the content of the greeting cards. Open the ornate border image in Photoshop. Use Magic Wand Tool to delete off the white color background. Once again, make sure that the Contiguous option is unchecked so that it will select the entire white color background when you click on any part of the white color background.

Step 25: Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to copy and paste the ornate border in our main project file. Resize it by pressing Ctrl+T. Duplicate the layer to create 3 more ornate borders. By pressing Ctrl+T, right click and flip vertical and flip horizontal for the ornate borders to create something like below. Merge all the ornate borders layers together in one. Set the Blending Mode to Linear Burn.

Step 26: Create a new layer below the ornate borders layer. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the right half of the card. Select a deep red color as the foreground color. Use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill in the deep red color to the selection.

Step 27: Now by using the Eraser Tool to erase the center part of the deep red color. Make sure that the Hardness of the Eraser is set to 100%.

Step 28: Now refer back to Step 15 and Step 16, we going to do the same thing to create the clipping mask on the deep red color layer with the vintage flower design image.

Step 29: Create a new layer on top. Select Brush Tool and choose the Grunge Effect brush that we created. Set the foreground color to black. Click once and resize it to the size of the half right side of the card by pressing Ctrl+T. Set the Blending Mode to Color Burn and turn the Opacity down to 70%. This will create a dirty look to the image.

Step 30: Select Line Tool. Set the Weight to 12px. Make sure that the Fill Pixel option is selected. Draw a straight line while pressing Shift key at the both side of the border. Create another two thiner line with the Weight of 3px side to the thick lines by using the same method. Set the Blending Mode to Linear Burn too.

Step 31: Open the paper collage image in Photoshop. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to copy part of the image and paste it in our main project file. Resize it by pressing Ctrl+T to fit it within the straight lines.

Step 32: Use the Eraser Tool to erase the part of the paper collage image that overlaps with the ornate border. Then set the Blending Mode of paper collage layer to Overlay and the Opacity to 50%.

Step 33: Create a new layer on top of the paper collage layer. Select Brush Tool and choose the Grunge Effect brush once again. Click once on the layer and resize it to the size of the paper collage image. Use the Eraser Tool to erase any part of the Grunge Effect that are not within the paper collage image. Set the Blending Mode to Color Burn and the Opacity to 30%.

Step 34: Use the Horizontal Type Tool to write the wordings of "Happy Anniversary". Restarize Type to make it as a image once again. Apply the effects of Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, and Bevel and Emboss.

Step 35: Use the Horizontal Type Tool to write the poem. As usual, Restarize Type to make it as a image. Create a Vector Mask on the layer. Select Brush Tool and choose the brush number 100. Enable Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Other Dynamics option and play with all the options within these 3 to get a random brush as possible. Then paint on the vector mask by using this brush to make some part of the wordings ink looks fade to create the old writing on the old paper look.

Step 36: Now open the image of the old watch and image of the cupid in Photoshop. Use the Magic Wand Tool and Eraser Tool to delete off the background of the both image. Then use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to copy the both image and paste in our main project file. Apply the effect of Drop Shadow to both of the image.

Now the Anniversary Card is finally done. Please do give some comment for my work. Thanx.
